South African Krugerrands were first issued in 1967, and they are legal tender. The obverse side of the coin, designed by Otto Schultz, displays a bust of Paul Kruger--the last president of the Republic of South Africa. The reverse side, designed by Coert Steynberg, displays a picture of a springbok, a type of South African gazelle. The edge of the coins are reeded. The purity of the coins are 22 Karat and the fineness is 916.7. Krugerrands are struck at the Pretoria Mint
